Poodle Origin
There is some argument over where Poodles originated. Though they are the national dog of France, Germany is probably their country of origin. Fortunately, we can all agree that no matter where they originated from, they make fantastic working and family dogs. They were bred to be water dogs and to accompany hunters to their duck hunting trips and the like. Their unique coat is water resistant and is so thick and curly that it was perfect for protecting the dog’s skin from repeated trips into the water to retrieve ducks. Poodles are still regarded as one of the hardest working dogs. They are extremely intelligent and they love to have a job to do. This makes them well suited to service work, protection work, agility sports and other dog sports.

Physical Attributes
Poodles are most known for their unique coat which protects them and keeps them dry. Female Standard Poodles usually weigh between 40-50 pounds and male Standard Poodles usually weigh between 60-70 pounds. They are over 15 inches tall and have a lean and muscular build. They are hypo-allergenic and non-shedding.
Grooming
Because of their unique coat, Poodles require regular grooming. Their hair mats easily and needs to stay tangle free and well clipped and groomed. There are many different ways to groom Poodles, a simple, short cut instead of an elaborative cut is becoming more and more popular. Elaborate, seemingly excessive grooming styles actually serve a purpose though (other than looking fancy). Since Poodles spent so much time in the water, they were given cuts that would keep their joints and vital organs warm and dry, while trimming away other areas to lighten the Poodle’s load as much as possible.
Personality
Poodles are a highly intelligent breed and are quite skillful in various activities. People are acquainted with them from the past as circus performers, but they are also quite formidable trackers and herders. They have amazing agility, and excel in obedience and show qualities, having taken top honors in conformation dog shows. Poodles also excel as assistance dogs due to their calm nature. Poodles have a very sweet nature and are gentle while also being capable and excellent at personal and family protection.
